Chinese officials feasted on a critically endangered giantsalamander and turned violent when journalists photographed the luxury banquet,according to media reports Tuesday on the event which appeared to floutBeijing's austerity campaign.

据媒体周二报道，在一场和中国政府的节俭运动相悖的宴会上，官员们享用了濒危动物娃娃鱼，并在记者拍摄他们的豪华宴会时殴打了前者。

The 28 diners included senior police officials from the southerncity of Shenzhen, the Global Times said.

"In my territory, it is my treat," it quoted a man in theroom as saying.

The giant salamander is believed by some Chinese to have anti-ageingproperties, but there is no orthodox evidence to back the claim.

The species is classed as "critically endangered" on theInternational Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of threatenedspecies, which says the population has "declined catastrophically over thelast 30 years".

The Global Times cited the Guangzhou-based Southern MetropolisDaily, which said its journalists were beaten up when their identities werediscovered by the diners.

One was kicked and slapped, another had his mobile phone forciblytaken, while the photographer was choked, beaten up and had his camera smashed,the reports said.
