HONG KONG — Rui Chenggang, one of the topanchors on China Central Television(CCTV), was dramatically detained byprosecutors as part of the country’s growing anti-graft probe.

香港——芮成钢，中国中央电视台著名主持人之一，被检方逮捕，接受反腐败调查。

Rui was due to present the Friday editionof the popular “Economic News” show when he was taken away. The show wentahead, but producers left an empty chair where Rui shold have sat.

芮本来应该在周五的时候主持《经济新闻联播》节目的，当时就被检方带走。节目照常进行，制片人在本应由芮坐的地点上留下了空荡荡的椅子。

Li Yong, deputy director of CCTV’sfinancial news channel, and an unnamed producer were also taken away.

央视财经新闻频道的副主任李勇也被带走。

According to local news sources more thanRMB1 million ($161,000) in cash were found in Li’s office by investigators. Liwas due to accompany China’s president Xi Jinping on an imminent trip toBrazil.

The anti-corruption campaign led byPresident Xi has already hit CCTV. Advertising boss Guo Zhenxi and producer Tan Liwuwere taken away forinvestigation last month. CCTV’s advertising contracts may also be connected toan earlier series of probes which saw senior executives from the media andentertainment industry called in.

CCTV then alleged that thepractise was offered on demand at other branches in Beijing, effectivelylabelling the whole bank as a money laundering institution.

Making CCTV’s attack all the moreextraordinary, it came in the same week that the State General Administrationof Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, issued a new directiveagainst investigative journalism. It banned media outlets from making criticalreports against major government institutions without approval.

Both CCTV and Bank of China are designatedas ‘central enterprises’ which are directly supervised by the State Council.Allegations against either normally requires approval in advance.
