HANOI/MANILA (Reuters) - Thousands of Vietnamese set fire to foreign factories and rampaged in industrial zones in the south of the country in an angry reaction to Chinese oil drilling in a part of the South China Sea claimed by Vietnam, officials said on Wednesday.

F.Y. Hong, president of Taiwan's Formosa Industries Corp, one of the firms to be attacked, said about 300 rioters looted televisions, computers and personal belongings of workers.

While those factories keep the Viet people employed, the working conditions there are extremely horrible. They work long hours (6-7 days a week, 10-14 hours/day) with little pay and often being treated like a slave. They're being harassed, beaten, humiliated by their foreigner employers such as Korean, Taiwanese, Chinese. To make matter worse, their government turn the blind eyes to them. There's had been protest, demonstration before, but not at this level. I don't want to defend them for being violent against those factories, but it's the last straw that broke the camel's back. China's facilities, first there are very few from China (because both China and Vietnam compete to have foreign investments), secondly China's facilities were well protected since China prepared in advance to have protection from Vietnam's security. So this is so called using "anti China" as the name/title and do attacking other foreigner's properties. China will welcome all the foreign investments in Vietnam move to China. The inner China's labor cost is still low and needs the investments to enhance people's living standard.
